Hey everyone and welcome to The Aidan Mack Show!
I hope you all have some extra energy today because today I’ll be talking about fitness! For this episode I decided to do something a little different, you’ll see coming up next…
(insert blue screen with a family running somewhere together, a white cartoon dad, a black mother, a white young boy follows them and a small black infant crawls along on the ground)
I’ll start with, what is physical activity?
Physical activity is any movement of the body which requires using energy. Physical activity and exercise can really help improve your health/strength and reduce the risk of getting/contracting diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Physical activity can have immediate and long lasting health benefits.
(insert blue screen with a white male and female running next to each other, on the right of them is written “Health Benefits of Cardio Exercise” in white letters)
Which leads me to, what is cardio exercise?
(insert black screen with a big red heart on it and a white rhythm strip showing the heartbeat line going through the heart shape)
(insert another screen of a hand holding a paper that is on fire burning which says, “calories” and a picture right after of a body X-ray image showing the veins in red all over the body that lead to the heart)
Cardio is a big help in getting your heart rate up, burning calories, and helps increase blood circulation throughout the body.
Cardio equipment when you go to a fitness center can be confusing, right? That’s why I decided to do something a little different for this episode…I’m going to take you all on a trip to my fitness center and see what I’ll be talking about there!! Come on everyone!!
(insert Aidan Mack in a gym room filled with elliptical machines. She is on the third machine in a row of five and she is wearing a black tank top, leggings with grey and white stripes, and pink and black NewBalance sneakers. Her hair is worn up and pulled into a bun)
(Aidan is signing while using the elliptical)
Fifth on my list today is the elliptical.
This doesn’t have the best grade; it’s rated as a D+ according fitness experts. For many reasons. One being, it’s not a natural movement for the body. It’s awkward and unnatural for the arms. Two, it doesn’t have much weight bearing there’s no room to improve on muscle strength to support your bones, none at all. There’s also a lack of dynamics, meaning no option for any type of incline which provides little to no opportunities with building stamina. It’s easy performance and doesn’t provide a challenge. A heads up for you, this doesn’t build any type of resilience it’s the same as siting down and watching tv. Let’s check out what’s number 4 on my list.
(Aidan grabs handles of elliptical machine and hops off to her right walking to the next machine, the screen shifts)
(Aidan appears on the arc trainer, there are only 2 and they are positioned right next to the elliptical machines)
(Aidan explains the machine while moving her legs and exercising at the same time)
The arc trainer is better than the elliptical. It burns 60% more calories than using an elliptical.
This isn’t the best thing to use to build strong bone density. Arc Trainers really focus on our lower body. Just the lower parts like your hamstrings, quads, and glutes. Keep in mind arc trainers are not the best for building muscle mass. You guys ready for number 3 on my list?
(Aidan slows down on machine, hops back and off smoothly and walks to the next machine)
(Aidan appears in a room with 2 rowing machines. She shows how to use the machine by pulling the heavy cord towards her 5 times while using her legs to push back)
Third on my list, the rowing machine. Rowing machines are the best for a full body workout, from your shoulders down to your calves. It’s a great way to improve your coordination and increase power speed. Rowing machines are gentle on the joints. It’s key to have the right form and you’ll make your entire body work to it’s full potential! For abs, don’t do it like this…
(shows what not to do by pulling the cord upwards)
do it like this…
(shows the right way to use the rowing machine by pulling towards the core and abs)
It’s all about the right form. Let’s go and see what’s number 2 on my list!
(Aidan hops off of the machine to her right and walks into the next room)
(Aidan appears in a room full of Stair Master machines, treadmills, and other running equipment in the background, she is climbing the stair mill)
Second on my list, stair mills. This is a beast for cardiovascular workouts. So good for the heart! Stair mills are also the best for our lower body; quads, hamstrings, calves, and gluteal muscle. It’s a lot of work but totally worth it, and it’s great for strengthening your core and your balance.
(Aidan grabs the bars on the side showing what not to do)
Keep in mind, you can’t hold these, these are only here for support if you lose your balance. But this must be done without holding on.
(Aidan lifts her arms and moves them back and forth in a jogging position showing the correct way to use the machine)
Perfect. If you hold onto these, (Aidan grabs bars on the side again)
you won’t get the results! So, I highly suggest you do it without holding on. What’s also awesome is you can turn around and focus on each side, like this;
(Aidan turns to one side facing the camera and uses one leg to alternate back and forth switching legs while lifting the other leg up while the stairs keep moving. Then she turns around with her back to the camera to show she can do both sides)
which is called lateral exercise. Again, the bars are to help you if you lose balance and preventing you from falling. But if you chose to hold on for your own comfort you won’t get you anywhere. Just saying! Next is number 1, you’ll see!
(Aidan uses the last stair in the machine to glide her way down and step off of the machine smoothly, screen shows her walking into another room)
(Aidan appears on a treadmill in a room with more than 5 of them lined up side by side. She is walking at a fast pace while signing)
Now you see, this is number one for a reason, the treadmill, it beats all of the cardio exercise equipment I mentioned today. It’s great for improving your energy expenditure, stamina, and overall endurance. Burns so much calories. Activates your muscles. It’s kinetic which means you’re copying outdoor walking, and running. This is the best out there and it’s so easy to do, the most novice person to the most advanced fitness enthusiast. There is so much versatility with the treadmill, inclincation, speed, and so much more. This is perfect for having a natural range of motion, as you walk and as you run. It has a great back pedal. There’s so much you can do. It helps pump blood to the heart. The list is endless with what you can do with treadmills. Over the years there’s been extensive research out there proving treadmills are number one and nothing else can beat them.
It’s important for you all to be aware of all the equipment I mentioned today. It’s good to alternate the equipment you use in the gym. Sometimes you work out hard one day and take it easy the following day. Hit the elliptical if you have bad knees. Arc trainers when you want to focus on your lower body. Use your common sense, when alternating machines to let one part of your body rest while you work out another part of the body. Do this and your workouts will be ran smoothly.
Now let’s get back to the studio!
(Screen shifts to Aidan back in the studio looking the same as when she opened the show with the video of the gym which fades away in the corner of the wall behind her)
Wow I learned a lot from her. Oh wait, that was me. Ahahah. Bad joke, I know!
Anyway, I hope you all learned something new today about ellipticals, arc trainers, rowing machines, stair mills, and treadmills.
(insert screen of a picture of an elliptical machine)
I want to be clear that ellipticals are good for people with bad knees because it’s gentle on the knees.
(insert a picture of a person bending down to grab their knee, the picture has an X-ray effect that shows orange around the knee showing inflammation or pain)
Make sure you keep a straight posture on the elliptical, don’t slouch! When it comes to your feet, put your weight on the heel and not your toes! Keep your feet flat, and not wobbly. Focus on your workout, and don’t get distracted by the TV, books, and other distractions. Don’t forget to move your arms and set the resistance 10 or higher,
(insert screen of a picture of a cardio machine’s display screen showing digital numbers and two up and down arrows on the left that say “incline” and two up and down arrows on the right of the numbers that say, “Resistance” which is circled in red and a red arrow is pointed to the word, “resistance”)
if it’s under a 10 it’s considered as you sitting down watching TV.
(insert screen of a picture of Humpty Dumpty sitting on a couch watching TV)
Make sure it’s at 10 or higher, alternate between arms and legs on the elliptical.
(insert screen of a picture showing a person using an elliptical with their left heel down and the word “left” next to it and their right arm pulling down with the word “right” next to it)
(insert picture of an X-ray image of injured hips that show the inflamed areas in red)
As a disclaimer, ellipticals are not good for the hips on a daily basis. I suggest you all to not be hung up on one machine all the time it’s better to play with all the equipment. “Be a slut with your cardio equipment!” Switch it up as much as you can, so your muscles don’t get use to the same old routine and won’t make any impact that you want. But if you alternate equipment it’ll impact your muscles.
I hope you enjoyed this show and learned something new!
Thanks for watching my show!
Thanks Casey and Domenick for your fabulous voice over!
(The two interpreters appear signing, “Thank you, Bye!” (music fades)
The Aidan Mack Show logo appears again.
